Harbingers of Peace and Struggle (2026)

Commentary on Harbingers of Peace and Struggle:

The three pieces in this series feature images of Civil Rights leaders: Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X, all of whom are centered in the foreground; behind them,  excerpts from their most popular speeches, namely, the Common Wealth Address, I Have a Dream, and, last but not least, The  Ballot or the Bullet. I purposely included portions wherein they discussed their visions of an ideal society, criticizing the false promise of the American Dream, redacted by the black stripes.

For the color scheme, I referred to the American flag. As you are aware, red represents valor. It  also symbolizes bloodshed, which is often associated with war. Here, I subvert expectations, encouraging onlookers to consider the long, troubling history of exploitation in our country—moreover, the sacrifices made to achieve equality. Blue represents perseverance and justice. It’s ironic, our institutions, intended to enforce laws, provide stability, and promote general welfare, contribute to systemic issues that largely affect marginalized groups. Despite the achievements of the Civil Rights Movement, I question, How far have we come as a nation? Finally, white signifies purity. Although their interests differed, they fought to better the country. Yet, all three were investigated by the FBI, perceived as a national threat.

In terms of inspiration, I implemented elements of collage, pop art, and scanography.

The majority of assets were self-made. There was no use of artificial intelligence. Support human-made art.
