Why?

With the prominence of AI, it can be discouraging for artists to create anything new. We are already underpaid, exploited for our labor. Now, I worry whether I am in competition with generative AI, which is equal parts absurd and dystopian. So, why should I waste my time producing music, writing poems, or editing videos when there are services available that generate content in a matter of seconds? For me, the production and participation in art are fundamental to the human experience. It is a form of expression, of course, but also taps into something greater, profound, intellectual, and primal, all at once. Humans are meaning-making creatures; we make meaning from a world indifferent to us and our desires, void of any absolutes, full of contradictions. To create is to rebel. We create, in protest, against oppressive powers, revolt against the conditions into which we are born. Thus, every song I produce, every poem I compose, every video I edit, however easy or ambitious, is a small act of rebellion. Put simply, I create because I can. I create because that is when I feel most alive, human, and authentic to myself.
